Legislative Update -- December 19, 2006

I am still trying to get my personal life in order to attend to my duties at the Capitol beginning Jan. 8th. It is a lot like getting ready for a long vacation but things keep popping up that cause a distraction. I am fortunate to have a great staff that is equal to the challenge of operating the business in my absence.

As you may have suspected there is a lot of discussion going on as to the hot topics that will get serious attention. Please let me know how you feel on the various issues as they become identified. My guess on some is as follows;

K-12 School finance and modifications to the “formula” All day kindergarten.
Higher Education building maintenance requirements.
Immigration issues and state wide photo I.D. cards
Funding of all state agencies.
Reducing the debt.
Highway programs and prioritization of projects Entitlement programs
Economic development.
Anything can be accomplished if you have enough money to throw at it. I have just listed a handful of topics and there are probably 20 sub-topics under each one. What is your issue? Let me know, but remember my rule; you may complain about something but offer an alternative to what is or is not being done.

I met with Board, Staff, and Admin representatives from Circle, Remington and EHS this week to discuss school issues and felt like we had a great exchange of ideas and open dialog. If you would like me to visit with your staff, club, study group, church, organization, or other group, call and let’s get together. I love to hear what you are thinking.

Remember too that I can get you a special certificate from the House of Representatives that honor, commemorate, or otherwise acknowledge an event, anniversary, birthday, or special occasion. All you do is contact me with the information and I will do the rest, just give me as much time as possible, two weeks is usually sufficient.

Would you like to come up for a visit? I tried this last year and had limited success, as when we get very busy there is not a lot of time to devote to showing you around. I will try to do better this year. If you want to come up mid-session is the best. Mid February until mid-March is when most debate and committee meetings are happening.

I should learn this week on specific assignments of committees and offices. I have heard the rumors but until I get up there this week and visit with staff I will not speculate on my duties. I encourage all to be active in the process by working with me and keep me informed about issues that are important to you or if something comes up you just do not understand call me.

Have a safe and pleasant holiday, Merry Christmas and happy New Year!
